What's Wrong with BCS?

(From BCS Guru)

As expected, Ohio State and LSU will be paired in the BCS national title game. But this result was, at best, accepted conventional wisdom; or at worst, a travesty. There are lots of upset people from Athens, Norman, Blacksburg to Los Angeles, not to mention Columbia and Tempe, where two teams were perceived to be robbed of deserved BCS berths.

So what's wrong with the BCS?

In short, everything.

The much revamped standings have reduced the system to a series of beauty pageants late in the season, with the voters changing their minds from week to week. The rules and regulations allow, at the same time, too much ambiguity and constraints, to make everybody unhappy.

So what should we do about it?

I'm glad you asked. The answer is: A lot. And I am not going to get involved in "playoff" talk because that's just a waste of time. What needs to be done -- and can be done -- is bring fixes to a badly flawed system and make it less flawed. If you can't make this pig beautiful by dressing it up, at least you should try to make it into bacon.

Just to whet your appetite: Craig Morton, one of the Harris panelists, voted LSU 11th. Eleventh! And Irwin Smallwood voted Georgia 10th -- and he's not alone!

These nuggets are just but a few items on the Guru's plate throughout this holiday season. The BCS standings might be final, but the Guru's work is hardly done. Please check back here for analysis throughout the bowl season -- and together, maybe we can do something about this unsightly beast.

LSU SUX!!! Why in the hell is a team playing for the national title after they lost to 2 UNRANKED TEAMS!! Umm in my opinion LSU doesnt even deserver to be in the BCS this year. What about Hawaii, ya they had a not so bad schedule but who gives a crap, any team that can go an entire season undefeated is amazing. They deserve that Title game but LSU. Wasn't it LSU crying and whinning a couple years ago because they "said they were getting screwed" so the BCS has "CO" national champs, well now its LSU, so them bitches at LSU that cried a couple years ago, musta cried again this year and got their way. STOP THIS BULLSHIT FAVOR GAME, AND GIVE THE TEAMS THAT REALLY DO DESERVE TO PLAY IN THESE GAMES PLAY. WHO CARES IF ITS SOME BIG NAME SCHOOL OR SOME SCHOOL IN A HOODUNK TOWN. IN MY EYES IF LSU WINS, CFB WILL HAVE NO NATIONAL CHAMP THIS YEAR!!1

This year's championship game is a joke. Go here to see why:

James, the problem with your concluding statement, is you assume a national championship exists. It doesn't. It never has, and never will. Untill the NCAA steps in, all we have, and all we ever have had, is and was polls proclaiming this and that. Only the governing body of a sport has the right to decree a champion.

Nice try, bryan, but I'm not visitng your lousy blog.

The problem is EZ enough to explain - with the polls now 2/3 of the BCS ratings, and voters who tend to act like sheep, you get a beauty contest.

I don't see any significant changes coming soon (other than possibly adding the Cotton Bowl) to the BCS, so we'll continue to have fun arguing about it.
